Four maids declared absconders interrogated in case of alleged suicide
Sharjah: Six people, including four housemaids declared absconders, have been interrogated by Sharjah Public Prosecution in connection with the death of a 30-year-old man, who fell from the 22nd floor balcony of his apartment in Al Nahda on April 24, Salem Al Za’abi, a Sharjah prosecutor. told Gulf News.
The incident took place at around 11pm.
The maids were taken into custody after CCTV footage from the building located on a busy Sharjah road showed them fleeing the apartment after the incident.
The building watchman and a man from the real estate company have been granted bail until the investigation is complete.
The victim was allegedly sheltering the maids in the apartment that, according to a building resident, he had rented just 10 days before the incident. Police found that the two-bedroom apartment had been partitioned into four sections each. Two maids were staying in one bedroom while the man, his girlfriend and two maids occupied the other bedroom.
According to investigations, the 30-year-old Sri Lankan victim is believed to have committed suicide after a heated argument with his girlfriend. Al Za’abi said that police believe that the couple was drunk at the time of the incident.
An eyewitness claimed the victim and his girlfriend had a physical altercation outside the apartment moments before he allegedly jumped from the balcony.
Al Za’abi said CCTV footage showed the maids fleeing the apartment in a state of shock. Based on the footage, a police team managed to track them down.
The Public Prosecution is investigating the sequence of events in the April 24 incident and whether there was any foul play. A medical report is also awaited.
Police have said that the man died due to the impact of the fall.
