Dubai: An Indian businessman was found dead and his wife was hospitalised after a suspected suicide pact at their apartment in Dubai Wednesday afternoon.

V. Kumar, owner of an advertising firm, and his wife, who managed the couple’s silver jewellery store, are believed to have entered into the pact after sending their two young sons to a relative, neighbours told Gulf News.

The couple had also sent their maid back home some days ago and the children did not go to school for some days, they said, adding that financial issues are suspected to have prompted the extreme step.

Unclear method

It was not clear how the couple, who hail from Andhra Pradesh, attempted to end their lives in their fourth-floor apartment in Umm Hurair Building in Karama.

“I went down to pick my son [up] from the school bus and that is when I heard this shocking news,” said an Indian woman living in the building. “We neighbours are really shocked and sad about this tragic incident. Their sons used to play with our kids,” said another one.

Kumar’s wife was rushed to hospital after police found her alive. Comments from the police were immediately not available.

An employee of Kumar said the latter had not gone to his company in International Media Production Zone on Tuesday. He said the employees were not aware of any huge financial problems though their salaries used to come a little late in the past some months. The company has been operational for about nine years.

“Their sons are just 10 and six years old. I was told they had sent the kids to a relative in International City. I really don’t know what happened. I am really upset,” he said.
