Credit cards are indeed a convenient and relatively secure way to pay for your expenses while on holiday.

Cards are widely accepted and most of them offer fraud protection, meaning you may not be held responsible for unauthorised charges on your plastic.

But this doesn't mean there's no need to take any precaution. If you opt to use your credit cards abroad, spin through this advice from American Express to make your holiday not only a memorable one, but stress-free as well.

2. Check your credit cards' expiry dates and their credit limits. Memorise PIN numbers for withdrawing cash.

3. Inform your card company about your travel plans, so that you have no problems when you use your card overseas.

4. Use the security box or safe provided by the hotel. When sightseeing or going to the pool or beach, do not carry all your valuables with you. Never leave cards unattended.

5. Keep sales receipts. You can use them as proof of purchase and for reconciling your account when you get home.

6. When you make a purchase, double check the bill to ensure you are being charged the correct amount.

7. If you suspect fraudulent activity on your card, notify your card company right away.
