Dubai: Most people think it's enough to provide the costs of a maid's visa, salary and other living expenses.

Often, they tend to overlook protection in terms of securing themselves or their maid in the event of an accident, theft or third-party liability. It would be financially burdensome for the employer if any of these happens.

Potential employers are strongly advised to secure an insurance policy that will provide cover if the maid injures herself while at work or accidentally destroys someone else's property.

Steve Gregory of Holborn Assets warns that children, helpers and parents can be held liable for damages caused accidentally outside the house: a child scrapes a neighbour's car with his cycle, a maid does it while pushing a pram, a fire in your home causes smoke damage or water damage to a neighbour's property.

You also need to insure your valuables, so that if you lose your important documents, stash of cash or jewellery, you are adequately covered.

Other experts also recommend setting aside a budget for health insurance and gratuity payment for the maid.

Savings plan

"They should buy insurance for their personal possessions and medical insurance for the maid," said Gregory.

They may like to start a small savings plan to fund for the gratuity payment due in future years at the end of service, as this may amount to a lot where a maid works for 10 or more years, and I have clients who have maids that have served with them for 20 years," .

Medical insurance can cost from Dh1,200 per year, while a comprehensive home insurance can cost from around Dh1,500 annually.
