Dubai: Merlin Entertainments, a British operator of visitor attractions, has outlined details of Legoland Dubai, which is due to open in 2016, according to a company statement on Wednesday.

The Legoland theme park, which will be the first in the Middle East and the seventh worldwide, will make up the first phase of Meraas Holding’s Dubai Parks & Resorts master development in Jebel Ali.

Covering an area of three million square feet, Legoland Dubai will include more than 15,000 Lego model structures made from over 60 million Lego bricks. This includes more than 40 interactive rides, shows and attractions set in six themed areas — Lego City, Adventure, Lego Kingdom, Create, Lego Factory and Miniland.

“Dubai is the most important tourist centre in the Middle East and we believe that it is the ideal place for Legoland. Not only is the Lego concept already very popular here, Legoland’s unique appeal for families with younger children is also universal. That makes it a must-visit not just for ‘local’ visitors from Dubai and neighbouring Middle Eastern states but also tourists visiting the region from all over the world,” stated Nick Varney, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments. “Indeed, we have no doubt that Legoland Dubai will add a whole new dimension to Dubai’s leisure scene.”

Alongside Legoland Dubai, the first phase of Dubai Parks & Resorts will also feature Motiongate Dubai, Bollywood Parks Dubai, Riverpark, which will serve as an entrance plaza district with retail, dining and entertainment options, and Lapita, a family themed hotel.

Merlin Entertainments runs 100 attractions in 22 countries.
