Dubai: More than 1.5 million passengers travelled through Abu Dhabi International Airport in August, marking an 18.5 per cent increase compared to the period in 2012.

The details of Abu Dhabi International Airport’s August traffic report were released on Sunday by Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac) in a press statement. Adac said that through August 2013 the 11,608 aircraft movements were a 15.5 per cent increase over the same period in 2012.

Cargo traffic was also up with a 29.9 per cent increase and more than 60,235 tonnes of cargo moved.

“The robust growth in August was primarily due to the busy Eid holiday and the beginning of the ‘back to school’ season,” Ahmad Al Haddabi, Chief Operations Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, said.

Abu Dhabi is currently increasing capacity in its existing facilities as well as building the new midfield terminal that is slated for completion in 2017.

Strategic enhancements

“The Capacity Enhancement Programme currently in progress will enable Abu Dhabi International Airport to accommodate more than 17 million annual passengers through strategic enhancements to existing facilities, the most recent of these being the new Arrivals Hall which opened last month,” Al Haddabi said.

Traffic numbers for August were above the year-to-date average. Passenger numbers year-to-date are up by 12.3 per cent, aircraft movements are up by 11.3 per cent, and cargo tonnes have increased by 23.3 per cent year-to-date.

Adac said that its top five destinations for August 2013 were Bangkok, London, Doha, Manila, and Bahrain.
