Dubai: There were 653 hotels with 159,945 rooms under contract in the Middle East and Africa region in May, according to the May 2015 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report.

The number of rooms under contract were up 16 per cent, while the number of rooms under construction (91,510 in 351 hotels) rose 40 per cent year-on-year.

Saudi Arabia had the most rooms under construction in the region with 28,050 rooms in 64 hotels, followed by the UAE with 22,724 rooms in 90 hotels and Qatar with 6,383 rooms in 26 hotels.

Hotels in Dubai saw occupancy edge up 2.3 per cent to 80 per cent, while the average daily rate (ADR) dropped 8.5 per cent to Dh709 year-on-year in May, according to preliminary data from STR Global. This forced revenue per available room (RevPAR) to drop 6.4 per cent to Dh567.5.

Supply was up 5.6 per cent, while demand grew by 8 per cent.
