DUBAI: The Big Clearance Sale, now in its third edition, kicked off in Dubai on Thursday.

The UAE retail sector’s growth is slowing down, as consumers refrain from spending on big ticket items, given their concerns over the global economy.

The three-day event taking place at the Dubai World Trade Centre has brought together 60 brands, up from 50 in the last edition in March, said Saeed Mohammad Mesam Al Falasi, Executive Director, Retail and Strategic Alliances at the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), the event’s organiser.

Retailers at the event are offering discounts of over 80 per cent on a range of products, from apparel and perfume to cosmetics, according to a statement from the DFRE. Some of the participating retailers include Apparel Group, Azadea Group, Landmark Group and Al Ghurair Retail, among others.

“The Dubai Summer Surprises and the Dubai Shopping Festival are happening within shopping malls and the percentage of discounts that are available are from 25 to 75 per cent. But at this event, a lot of the discounts are over 80 per cent,” Al Falasi said.

The last edition attracted 110,000 visitors, he said, adding that he expects a similar number for the current edition.
