Dubai: The 39th edition of the Mideast Watch & Jewellery Show in Sharjah has brought international retailers to jewellery lovers in the UAE.

The show, which opened on Tuesday, features international pavilions, including Hong Kong, Italy, Singapore, Thailand and India, said P. Ravi, director of sales and marketing at Expo Centre Sharjah.

Retailers, selling everything from gold and diamond jewellery to precious stones and pearls, expect a surge in sales, after subdued demand for jewellery during the summer, according to a statement from the show’s organiser, Expo Centre Sharjah. Jewellery demand in the UAE slid by 22 per cent in the second quarter of the year, it said, citing data from the World Gold Council.

Among the highlights of the show is the Najmat Taiba or Star of Taiba, said to be the world’s largest gold ring. The 64kg gold ring is studded with 5.17kg of precious stones.

There are over 500 exhibitors this year, up from 450 last year. The size of the show has also grown to 30,00 square metres from 28,000 square metres.

More than 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the five-day event, an increase from around 48,000 last year.

Admission to the show is free.
