DUBAI: Hypermarket chain Carrefour plans to open ten new stores in the UAE in 2017, according to a statement on Sunday from Majid Al Futtaim, which holds the Carrefour franchise in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia.

Carrefour has set a target to reach 140 hypermarkets and 210 supermarkets in the countries in which Majid Al Futtaim operates by 2018.

“In the last two decades we have witnessed a number of retail trends emerge, including increasing demand for smaller supermarket-style stores in recent years. We will continue to grow the hypermarket brand in the UAE with the addition of two more hypermarkets and address the growing trend for smaller convenient stores through the introduction of eight new supermarkets. We also look forward to extending our home delivery service, which we are currently testing in selected areas in Dubai,” stated Miguel Povedano, Executive Regional Director for Carrefour UAE.

Majid Al Futtaim holds exclusive rights to the Carrefour franchise in 38 markets across the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, and operates a portfolio of more than 160 outlets in 15 countries. It also owns and operates 20 shopping malls, 12 hotels and three mixed-use communities, with further developments underway in the region.
