Dubai: The world’s tallest ‘commercial’ tower to be, Dubai 2020, will have Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture as the architect, while WATG assumes the role of delivering the master plan. The skyscraper, whose height is yet to be revealed, will be located at the DMCC Free Zone.

Adrian Smith, founder of AS+GG based in Chicago, has been associated with the world’s tallest structures — the Burj Khalifa while at SOM and the Kingdom Tower, currently under construction in Jeddah.

WATG was one of four international ‘destination creation’ firms that participated in DMCC’s Burj 2020 District master plan design competition launched in July 2014. Other notable WATG projects include Atlantis-Dubai, Paradise Island-Bahamas, Emirates Palace-Abu Dhabi, and the Grand Hyatt-Kuala Lumpur.

“Designing a world-class destination of this scale will set new levels of efficiency and urban sustainability and we are confident that our partners, in delivering the ‘Burj 2020 District’ and tower, will create a new address for the global business community of the future, right here in Dubai,” said Ahmad Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, DMCC.

The Burj 2020 District will add some 1.3 million square metre capacity to the ‎DMCC Free Zone.
