Dubai: The Maze Tower in Dubai has been recognised by Guinness World Records as representing the largest vertical maze. The 55-storey structure, completed in January 2012, is located off Shaikh Zayed Road. Its main feature is the maze — the intricate lines of balconies on the front and rear facades are in the shape of a maze — which forms real puzzles. “The creation of this unique building was a prestigious project for the Al Rostamani Group, which drew its inspiration from the creative and innovative changes taking place across Dubai and the UAE,” said Marwan Abdullah Al Rostamani, chairman of Al Rostamani Group and developer of the tower.

The natural stones used throughout the Maze were hand selected for their aesthetic and tactile appeal. The same stone — Brazilian Verde Bahia — is used throughout the exterior.

The dark greenish hue on the building’s corner posts is achieved using a water jet treatment, which creates an even, matt surface. The lighter hue used to emphasise the Maze is achieved using a flame technique that roughens the surface and creates a lighter, more reflective surface.

“We always wanted The Maze to look like it was carved out of one massive piece of rock, with the constant play of light and shadow to render it alive,” said Hassan Abdullah Al Rostamani, vice-chairman of Al Rostamani Group and The Maze Tower Conceptualiser.

The high-rise also has four significant features — the Maze Eye (an eight-metre circular video wall at the top of the building that has the ability to beam images); LED lights built into the exterior facade of the maze pattern that can display a multitude of colours and patterns; a purpose-built garden floor in the middle of the building; and a rooftop maze patterned garden above the stand-alone car park.
