Luxury resort to be centrepiece of DTCD project

Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on Sunday announced the centrepiece of its 34,000 square metre development project, Dubai Trade Centre District (DTCD).

Dubai: Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on Sunday announced the centrepiece of its 34,000 square metre development project, Dubai Trade Centre District (DTCD).

At the heart of the redevelopment will be a luxury "urban resort", according to Helal Saeed Al Merri, director-general of DWTC.

"DWTC is engaged in the largest redevelopment project of its history. The vision is to create a commercial district in line with top cities of the world, like London and Tokyo," Al Merri said.

The area of DTCD redevelopment, stretching from Trade Centre roundabout to Emirates Towers, is poised to become a global epicentre for business.

The project is being operated by Amanresorts, a Singapore-based company that owns and manages luxury resorts and GHM, also a big player in the luxury hospitality industry.

It will be Amanresort's first development in the Gulf region and GHM's first venture in the UAE.

"We want it to be the gateway of the development itself," said Al Merri.

The development will comprise of four buildings which are expected to be delivered in 2011 or 2012.

The exact value of the project will be announced after summer.

Al Merri said that they were two-thirds of the way through piling on the site and the tendering process should conclude before the summer.

Hans Jenni, president of GHM, said, "Our ideas and understanding of business travellers' expectations of luxury and relaxation blends in well with those of the Dubai World Trade Centre."

Adrian Zecha, chairman of Amanresorts said Amanresorts currently operates 22 luxury hotels in 12 countries and has three more "on the way".
