So you’ve moved to a new home and have a garden to enjoy. But you are filled with questions about how best to spruce it up and take it to the next level with the right accessories. There is furniture to think of, finding the right theme for your garden and adding your own personal touch. Here are four simple steps to follow that will help make up your mind faster. For starters, determine the space of your garden, then determine the style, choose the furniture, which includes the famous swing chair you must have, and get inspiration from well-known arrangement tips.

Determine the space

Space is the most essential factor when it comes to interior design. That’s why you should know how big your garden is and how many people it will accommodate. Also, look for answers at questions like, what is the usage for your garden, do you plan to use it mainly for weekend family barbecues or for hosting friends every now and then? This will help you plan what pieces you actually need.

Determine the style

Each style has some main components and furniture pieces to go with it. That’s why this next question is also important: Is your home built in a certain style? Is it modern, contemporary, minimalist, traditional, transitional or is it a combination of these based on your own taste? It’s essential to know your style and the style you’re looking to bring into your space to create a harmony between the rooms, the indoors and the outdoor. In case you don’t have much knowledge on interior design styles, we advise discussing with an interior designer — a person or a company — that will help you build a consistent home design and bring the right furniture.

Choose the furniture

When choosing the furniture set make sure to look at the weight and the material it’s made of. The weight should be light so it won’t damage the floor or the grass. Also, having lightweight furniture means you can easily move the pieces around, which is something you will most probably want to do. The furniture should be made of washable materials as the garden will be exposed to water, whether from the rain or when watering the grass and plants. Choose sets that don’t rust or have a particular smell when they get wet.

One of the most famous furniture pieces for gardens is the swing chair. Also known as the hanging chair or the hammock chair, it completes a garden in style. The idea behind its success is the fact that it’s both comfortable and it comes in different styles (as pictured above), which makes it suitable for different designs of indoor and outdoor spaces. It is also fun and relaxing to spend some time swinging, no matter the age.

Arrangement tips

* Create a focal point that will anchor your outdoor space, which as a result will serve as the gathering point.

* You can have symmetrical furniture arrangements if you’re planning to create a formal living space. Otherwise, go with asymmetrical arrangements as it creates more of a casual feel.

* Arrange your furniture in a way that directs guests around the primary seating area. Nothing is more irritating than having to squeeze in through chairs and tables while people are eating, chatting or playing cards.

* The longest piece of furniture should be facing the focal point to not detract attention. Typically, the longest piece can be a three-seat sofa or a love seat. Adding several chairs will encourage guests to pull up one and join the conversation.

* Separate the space into smaller sections. This will create a dynamic and functional area. It depends on the space your garden has, but you can go with having multiple areas of entertainment instead of one large open space. You can create an engaging outdoor by adding occasional chairs, an outdoor fireplace or area rugs.
