Abu Dhabi: British Airways has cancelled two flights in the region this week due to the strike by its cabin crew, a senior airline official said Wednesday.

"There are two daily flights from Dubai to London. The one on the Boeing 747 has been cancelled. The other flight on the Boeing 777 is operating as normal," British Airways Regional Commercial Manager-Middle East Paolo De Renzis told Gulf News by telephone.

He said the daily British Airways flight on the Abu Dhabi-London route with the Boeing 777 is operating normally. "In the GCC, the London-Bahrain-Doha, Doha-Bahrain-London flight with the Boeing 747 has been cancelled from May 26 to May 29. The rest of our Middle East flights continue to operate as normal," De Renzis added.

Further walkouts

He said passengers affected by the cancellation of the Dubai-London flights have either been "accommodated on the other operating flight on the same route or have been rebooked on other airlines at no additional cost."

British Airways has cancelled flights for about 75,000 people this week as the strike by its 12,000 flight attendants entered its third day yesterday with no indication of a return to talks over wages and staffing levels.

The Unite union is planning further walkouts if it can't reach a compromise with the company, which had sales of £8 billion (Dh42 billion) in fiscal 2009. This week's stoppage is to be followed by more five-day strikes starting on May 30 and June 5, Unite says.

The company's flight attendants walked out on May 24, the start of a third round of strikes, after negotiations between the airline and Unite broke down at the weekend.
