Dubai: Strata Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi government owned company Mubadala, increased production quantity in 2013, albeit without turning a profit.

The aerospace parts manufacturing company, based out of Al Ain, delivered 301 ship sets to aircraft manufactures in 2013, a 62.7 per cent increase to the 185 it delivered in 2012, it announced in an embargoed press release on Thursday.

A ship set can the complete set of parts for a component or system of an aircraft.

The production increase follows last months release of the 2013 financial results where the company reported revenue of Dh220 million. In 2012 it reported Dh110 million. Strata stated that it invested $320 million (Dh1.2 billion) in 2013, 28 per cent more than the previous year. But the increase in revenue and investment does not correlate to a profit margin. Chief executive Badr Al Olama told The Wall Street Journal last month that Strata has targeted to be profitable by 2016/2017.

For 2014, Strata stated that it is targeting a revenue “in excess” of Dh300 million and is looking to deliver more than 400 ship sets.

In 2013 Strata produce 1936 parts on the Airbus A330/A340 Flap Track Fairings programme, compared to 1,504 parts in 2012, an increase of 28.7 per cent.

Fairings are covers for gaps and spaces between parts on a aircraft to reduce drag.

Strata also produces parts for the A380 Flap Track Fairing Programme. In 2013, it produced 1,193 parts, compared to 1,042 the previous year.

It increased the amount of produced A330/A340 Aileron Panels by 31.7 per cent, producing 872 in 2013, compared to 662 in 2012. Strata were also able to produce 30 assembled Ailerons in 2013, compared to one in the previous year.

Increased contract

The Aileron Panels are a hinged “little wing” attached to each wing to the aircraft and are used to control aircraft movement.

Strata was established just four years ago to produce one wing part for Airbus. Since then it has increased its contract with Airbus and signed deals with Boeing, ATR and Dassault, Its current contract book reportedly stands at $7.5 billion following the $2.5 billion contracts it signed with Boeing and Airbus at the Dubai Airshow last year.

Strata significantly increased its production of spoilers with 546 product in 2013 compared to 13 2012, representing an increase of more than 4000 per cent. The company stated that, “this programme continues to be technically complicated and to demand high attention to detail during the manufacturing process.

Strata produced eight ATR vertical fins during 2013, compared to just the one the previous year. It stated that “the ATR vertical fin programme demonstrates Strata’s ability to manufacture and deliver primary aircraft structures.”
