Dubai: Sharjah International Airport saw a 6.11 per cent increase in passenger traffic in the first three months of the year, the airport said in a statement on Monday.

A total of 2.4 million passengers used the airport from January 1 to March 31 compared to 2.25 million a year earlier, according to an emailed statement.

The number of airplane take-offs and landings were 16,865, up 3 per cent in the first quarter compared to 16,373 in the first three months of 2014. The airport handled 42,987 tonnes of freight and 4,564 tonnes of sea-air cargo.

“As the numbers clearly suggest, robust passenger traffic growth continues. This is being driven due to the efficient procedures, excellent services and the strategic location of Sharjah International Airport within UAE,” said Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority.

“In addition to the new routes and frequencies that are regularly launched by Air Arabia, new carriers are witnessing the attractiveness of Sharjah as a business hub and tourist destination – who in turn are joining our airlines’ community to enjoy the benefits of operating through Sharjah International Airport,” he added.
