Abu Dhabi: Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport jumped 14 per cent in July to reach over 7.61 million passengers from 6.68 million in the same month in 2015, marking a historic high for the airport.

According to the monthly traffic report issued by operator Dubai Airports on Monday, around 48.1 million passengers used the airport in the first seven months of this year — up seven per cent over the 45 million passengers recorded in the same period in 2015.

Eastern Europe was the fastest growing region in July (up 33.4 per cent), followed by Asia (up 20.8 per cent), and the Indian subcontinent (up 17.1 per cent). GCC traffic rose 16.2 per cent while North America registered a 13.9 per cent increase.

India was the top destination country for passengers at Dubai International, with 990,213 passengers flying there, followed by the UK, and Saudi Arabia. In terms of cities, London, Doha, Mumbai, Kuwait, and Bangkok topped the list of most popular destinations served from the airport.

Aircraft movements in July reached 35,832 (up 5.8 per cent year-on-year), bringing movements for the first seven months of the year to 243,035 (up 5.1 per cent year-on-year). The passengers per movement remained high at 220 in July driven by the airport’s rising ratio of wide-bodied aircraft.

Meanwhile, freight volumes at Dubai International dropped 1.2 per cent in July to 203,153 tonnes, bringing the total amount of cargo handled during the first seven months to 1.48 million tonnes (up 3.2 per cent year-on-year).
