Ras Al Khaimah: A committee set up by the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Civil Aviation to look into the failed operations of RAK Airways will finally conclude next month after two extensions.

The initial three-month investigation into what went wrong at the airline that collapsed after suspending operations on New Years day 2014, started in March 2014 and was later extended by six months until December 31 the same year. But Mohammad Qazi, Ras Al Khaimah International Airport (RAK Airport) chief executive and head of the “reconstruction committee”, said in an interview on Thursday it was subsequently extended until March 31, 2015.

The investigation was extended twice because of the sheer amount of documents the committee had to go through, Qazi said. But once the investigation wraps up next month its findings may never be made public.

“We are commissioned by the Department of Civil Aviation just to investigate, not to then share that [information] publicly. Our report goes to [the Department of] Civil Aviation and it’s then their decision if they want to [make the findings public],” Qazi said.

There has never been a formal announcement on the closure of the airline despite it being known that the two leased aircraft have been returned to their owners and that all staff were made redundant.

Shaikh Salem Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the chairman of RAK Department of Civil Aviation and RAK Airport, was the vice-chairman of RAK Airways.
