Abu Dhabi: Over 1.86 million travelled through Abu Dhabi International Airport in February 2016, marking an 8.7 per cent increase from the 1.71 million that travelled through the airport in the same month in 2015.

The figure brings the year-to-date passenger numbers to over four million — an 11.5 per cent rise over the 3.6 million recorded in the same period in 2015.

According to a statement from Abu Dhabi Airports on Sunday, traffic between India, UK, Thailand, Australia, and the US witnessed increase passenger figures from the airport.

Several other destinations saw significant growth in passenger traffic, with Australia beating its February 2015 figures by 45.2 per cent last month, as the UK recorded an 18.8 per cent increase in the same period.

Aircraft movements in February 2016 reached 13,307 — up 3.5 per cent from 12,852 movements recorded in the same month last year. Bangkok, London Heathrow, Mumbai, Doha, and Jeddah were the top five routes from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The airport also handled 62,297 metric tonnes of cargo last month, marking a 2.8 per cent drop from the cargo handled in February last year. This brings the total cargo handled year-to-date to 124,043 metric tonnes — down 3.5 per cent from the same period in 2015.

Abu Dhabi Airports is currently working on the multibillion dollar expansion of the capital’s airport, with the construction of the Midfield Terminal, which is designed to increase the overall capacity of the airport to over 45 million passengers per year.

As per the development, a second runway and a third terminal have been completed.
