Dubai: German carrier Lufthansa Airlines has cancelled two-thirds of its global flights after pilots began a four-day strike.

The airline is still operating some flights between Germany and the UAE, such as the Dubai and Munich route. However, flights to Frankfurt airport were cancelled for the duration of the strike.

On normal schedule, it operates a daily service between Dubai and Frankfurt with a jumbo Boeing 747, a daily service between Dubai and Munich with an A340-600 and also six flights a week between Abu Dhabi and Frankfurt.

An airline spokesperson said the operator had moved passengers to other flights, scheduled before or after the strike, and also to alternative airlines.

"According to our current planning status and the special flight schedule, put in place for the period of the strike ... further cancellations out of the UAE are not likely, but cannot be ruled out due to operational reasons," a Lufthansa spokesperson told Gulf News.

"I deeply regret and apologise for any inconvenience caused to our valued customers and do the utmost to limit the impact of the strike on travellers. Our subsidiaries, namely Swiss International Air Lines and Austrian Airlines, are not affected by this strike. Flights from Dubai to Zurich and from Dubai to Vienna are operating according to schedule.

"We proactively inform our customers if and when changes occur and kindly ask them to check on the status of their flights online at www.lufthansa.com, where we have published our special timetable, which is continuously being updated."
