German airspace closed

German airspace will remain closed until 2:00 am Sunday (0000 GMT) due to the cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland expanding over Europe, the German air safety agency DFS said.

The shutdown affects all 16 international airports, including Lufthansa's hub in Frankfurt.

Lufthansa has already declared that it is cancelling all its flights that were scheduled to depart or arrive in Germany up to 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) on Saturday.

Hamburg airport will remain shut until at least 2:00 p.m. (1200 GMT) on Sunday, said an airport spokesman who advised the estimated 20,000 travellers affected to change their reservations by telephone.

Italy

Airspace across northern Italy will remain closed until 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) on Saturday, six hours later than initially planned, the Italian civil aviation authority ENAC said.

The shutdown - the result of an expanding cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland - affects Italy's biggest airports, Milan Malpensa and Linate, where more than 300 flights on Saturday had already been cancelled.

Bologna, Turin and Venice airports are also affected, and in a statement, ENAC warned that if conditions warrant, it could decide later in the day to extend the closure period further or to expand the no-fly zone.

UK extends ban

Britain has extended a ban on most flights in its airspace until at least 0000 GMT on Sunday due to the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland, air authorities said.

Belgium

The government says it has extended its ban on flights in Belgian air space until Saturday evening.

The ban was extended on Saturday morning, with Transport Minister Etienne Schouppe deciding that no flights would be allowed until 1800GMT Saturday because of the path of volcano ash plumes traveling from Iceland.

Ryanair

Irish airline Ryanair, Europe's biggest low-cost carrier, said it would cancel flights to and from northern European countries until 1200 GMT on Monday.

Delta

Delta Air Lines, the world's largest airline, cancelled 75 flights between the United States and European Union countries on Friday, Delta spokesman Anthony Black said.

United Kingdom

Britain has extended a ban on most flights in its airspace by six hours to 7:00 pm (1800 GMT) Saturday and reapplied restrictions in Scotland, air authorities said

Netherlands

Dutch air space will remain closed until at least 2:00 pm (1200 GMT) on Saturday due to the volcanic ash cloud over Europe, the Dutch transport inspectorate, IVW, said.

France

The three airports in Paris and 11 provincial airports will remain closed until 2:00 pm (1200 GMT) Saturday because of a volcanic ash cloud from Iceland, the civil aviation authority said.

The DGAC civil aviation authority announcement pushed back the opening of Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport, France's main international hub, and the two other airports in the capital from 0600 GMT set earlier Friday.
