Dubai:

Etihad Airways is not pricing airfares in line with the United Arab Emirates’ new monthly retail petrol pricing structure, the airline said on Wednesday in response to a local report.

“The price Etihad Airways pays for its jet fuel, whether in Abu Dhabi or in other markets around the world, is linked to benchmark indices that are independently assessed on a daily basis. There is currently no link between the price of petrol in the UAE and the price charged for jet fuel,” an Etihad Airways spokesperson told Gulf News by email.

A local newspaper reported on Wednesday the airline would now determine the price of economy class tickets monthly in line with the country’s new fuel pricing policy. Etihad, however, dismissed the report.

“Etihad Airways’ total ticket prices are made up of a combination of elements, including fuel surcharges, and are competitively positioned in the markets we operate and sell in,” the spokesperson said.

The UAE announced last week it is removing subsidies on petrol sold at service stations in the country on August 1. A new monthly national price will set based on an average of international prices on the 28th of each month for the following month. The first new monthly price was announced on Tuesday.
