Dubai: Emirates SkyCargo is testing facilities and trucking operations between Dubai World Central and Dubai International ahead of its move to Al Maktoum International next month.

The cargo division of Emirates said on Wednesday that it is on track to begin operations with all 12 freighters on May 1. The first phase of building one, which is the cross docks and perishables areas, has been completed. Cargo handling system and interiors are expected to be finished shortly, the airline said in a statement.

It added that operations will start with 250 staff and will be increased to 500 when the terminal at Al Maktoum International is fully operational. The new Emirates SkyCargo terminal will include a fully automated material handling system.

Requirements

“With almost two million tonnes of cargo being processed per year at Dubai International Airport, the new facility enables us to increase our capacity addressing SkyCargo’s long term requirements,” stated Dave Gould Senior Vice President Cargo Operations Worldwide.

Once fully complete, the terminal will be able to handle 700,000 tonnes per year and can potentially be expanded to one million tonnes.

While SkyCargo freighters will be handled exclusively from DWC, passenger fleet belly cargo operations will continue to operate from Dubai International.
