Dubai: Passengers who want to travel with extra bags can now enjoy an online discount, Emirates airlines said.

Emirates said it had launched a new pre-paid option on its website, for extra bags.

The discount was a 15 per cent reduction on standard airport charges for additional bags, but it only applied to purchases on Emirates.com.

"Planning can make a journey more enjoyable and hassle-free," said Russell Sheldon, Emirates Senior Vice President of network passenger sales and development.

"Now passengers with additional baggage can also save money when they pay for the extra weight in advance of their trip," he said.

"We encourage passengers to weigh their suitcases, and check the website for details on costs of additional weight."

Emirates customers departing from most Emirates airports would be able to buy discounted additional bags online on Emirates.com, the company said.

Ticketed customers may log in to Emirates.com to manage their booking within 24 hours of departure to buy an amount of additional baggage.

For routes that charged for additional baggage by weight, customers could buy 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 kilos, the airline said.

The customers must buy one of these five amounts to suit the additional weight they wished to take.

For routes that charged by the piece, customers may buy one, two or three additional bags of up to 32kg each.

Purchases were non-refundable and non-transferrable, and must be made between 24 hours and 90 minutes prior to flight departure, the company said.

The offer only applied to adults and children, not infants.

Only one online purchase of additional baggage per passenger per continuous journey was permitted, the airline said.
