Dubai Government's investment in airport development will exceed Dh45 billion over 15 years, split between two airports Dubai International Airport and Jebel Ali International Airport, said a senior government official.

This is part of a Dh140 billion investment that also involves Dh110 billion ($30 billion) in aircraft purchases that government-owned Emirates has placed since 2003.

This is much higher than the emirate's GDP, which last year reached $26.7 billion.

This, however, does not include possible new orders by Emirates that are expected to be announced in the next few weeks, as indicated by senior Emirates officials.

With a combined passenger capacity of more than 190 million annually, Dubai's two airports will have the largest in the world. For a city like Dubai with 1.1 million population this will be phenomenal.

"Dubai's emergence as a world-class tourism and business hub has called for massive investments in the airport infrastructure development to meet the expected projections of 60 million passengers by 2010," Anita Mehra Homayoun, director of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Dubai Civil Aviation (DCA), told delegates at a conference on business aviation yesterday.

"DCA will invest Dh45 billion in airport development. The expansion plan of Dh15 billion includes the construction of Terminal 3 and Concourses 2 and 3. "The Jebel Ali Airport City is currently undergoing a Dh30 billion development and is expected to change the landscape of Dubai's south."

These are part of the Dh70 billion airport developments and expansion that the UAE is currently witnessing, including a Dh25 billion redevelopment of Abu Dhabi International Airport.

"Dubai International Airport has been rated the second fastest growing airport in the world by the Airport Council International (ACI). It has recorded 20 per cent growth, only second to South Korea's Incheon Airport that recorded 43 per cent last year," she said.

"ACI reports on traffic movement rate Dubai International Airport 16th in terms of international passengers that recorded 21.7 million and 14th in terms of freight in the world."

Non-aeronautical revenue contributes 68 per cent to DIA's total revenue, Homayoun said.

"These include a major component from the Dubai Duty Free operations, retail, facilities management, real estate, parking facilities and advertisement," she said.
