Dubai: Dubai International registered a 6.9 per cent increase in passenger numbers in February, according to a statement from operator Dubai Airports, on Wednesday.

The airport saw 6.3 million passengers in February compared to 5.9 million in the same month a year earlier, the statement said.

Dubai International is the world’s busiest airport for international passengers and home to the rapidly expanding Emirates.

Total passenger numbers in the first two months of the year have risen 6.5 per cent to 13.7 million, according to the statement.

In February, Eastern Europe was the faster growing market in terms of percentage growth, up 14.6 per cent, followed by the Indian subcontinent, up 11.5 per cent. North American traffic grew 10.7 per cent and Arab Gulf traffic rose 7.9 per cent.

Landings and take-offs

India was the top destination in overall numbers with 885,298 passengers, followed by Saudi Arabia with 485,570 passengers and the United Kingdom with 460,279. London was the most popular destination, followed by Doha and Mumbai.

The number of landings and take-offs at the airport rose 6.3 per cent to 32,975 in February while freight volumes grew 3 per cent to 1921,002 tonnes. The majority of Dubai’s air freight is handled at the emirate’s secondary airport Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC).
