Dubai: Hundreds of thousands of travellers are expected to fly through the UAE this week during the Eid Al Adha break with many employees in the country off work until September 27.

Dubai International is expected to handle an average of 220,000 passengers a day this week, operator Dubai Airports told Gulf News by email on Tuesday.

The world’s busiest airport for international passengers was expected to have a peak level of departures on Tuesday and peak arrivals are expected on September 27th and 28th.

“Dubai Airports will deploy additional staff at key points between the kerb and the boarding gates to ease customers through the airport,” the operator said.

Etihad Airways said in a statement it expects to carry over 230,000 passengers this week, an increase of 20 per cent compared to Eid Al Adha a year ago.

Top destinations for the Abu Dhabi carrier this week will be London, Bangkok, Manila, Sydney, New Delhi, New York, Melbourne and Munich.

Many tourists from neighbouring Gulf States are also expected in Abu Dhabi, according to Abu Dhabi International operator Abu Dhabi Airports.

Last week, Emirates said it expects to carry more than 300,000 passengers out of the UAE in September and the Eid Al Adha period, 65 per cent more than last years Eid Al Adha.

The airline will carry 76,000 passengers on Friday September 25, it said, with top destinations being London, Dhaka, Cairo, Mumbai and Karachi.

Inbound travellers are also expected to flock to the UAE over the Eid break. Emirates said more than 190,000 passengers will arrive in Dubai from the UK, India, Germany, Australia, the United States and South Africa.

Flydubai is also expecting a higher than normal number of arrivals and passengers travelling with the airline this week with most of its flights into Dubai fully booked, a spokesperson said.
