Dubai: Executives from 240 global airlines will be in Qatar this week for the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) 70th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Transport Summit in Doha.

The AGM and World Transport Summit, featuring a number of high profile discussions and keynote speeches addressing issues impacting the industry, will be held from Sunday June 1 to June 3. It is the fourth time the AGM will be held in the Middle East.

“Doha will be the centre of the air transport industry next week as its leaders discuss the most important commercial aviation-related issues of our time: safety, security, environment, distribution and financial sustainability among others,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and chief executive.

The AGM and World Transport Summit are hosted by Qatar Airways and follow the recent opening of Doha’s newest airport Hamad International.

“The AGM will be a major event for aviation in the Middle East, and particularly for the airlines based in the Gulf region. These carriers, including Qatar Airways, have been at the core of a major shift in global aviation. In just over a decade, the share of global traffic accounted for by Middle East airlines increased from 4 per cent to 9 per cent. Much of this growth has been realised here in the Gulf,” said Tyler.
