Dubai: Abu Dhabi International saw a 5.6 per cent rise in passenger numbers in March, operator Abu Dhabi Airports said in a statement on Tuesday.

The airport, home to the rapidly expanding Etihad Airways, saw 2.02 million passengers in March, compared to 1.91 million a year earlier, the statement said.

The number of aircraft landing and taking off at Abu Dhabi International in March fell by 1.5 per cent to 14,383, while the amount of cargo handled fell by 5.9 per cent to 67,364 tonnes.

In the three months to March 31, passenger numbers rose 9.5 per cent to 6.04 million while the number of aircraft landings and take-offs rose 1.5 per cent to 42,204, the statement said.

Abu Dhabi Airports’ chief operations officer Ahmad Al Haddabi stated passenger numbers from the United Kingdom, Thailand and the United States rose in the first quarter.

Bangkok, London Heathrow, Jeddah, Doha and Delhi were the top five destinations in the first quarter.

Cargo handled at the airport fell in the first quarter by 4.4 per cent to 191,407 tonnes, the statement said.
