Abu Dhabi International Airport recorded a 21.4 per cent increase in passenger traffic in the month of June compared with June 2013, Abu Dhabi Airports said on Wednesday. The airports body also announced an increase of 19.4 per cent for the airport in the first half of 2014 against the same period last year.

A total of 9,481,744 passengers passed through the airport in the first six months of 2014, as opposed to 7,941,922 in the equivalent period in 2013, the airports body said in a statement.

Aircraft movements rose to 73,862, representing 11.8 per cent growth compared with 65,072 aircraft movements reported in the first half of 2013. Meanwhile, cargo activity soared by 16 per cent in the corresponding period against last year’s figures.

The top five routes from the airport between January and June were Bangkok, Manila, Doha, Jeddah and London Heathrow, stated the airports body. New destinations added to the airport’s network include Los Angeles, Zurich and Jaipur.

India saw a substantial increase in traffic for the first half of 2014, as a result of new routes added between Abu Dhabi and India, said officials. Saudi Arabia, Germany, Pakistan and the UK were the next largest in terms of passenger traffic to and from Abu Dhabi.
