Dubai: More than 7.6 million passengers used Dubai International Airport in April, marking a 9.2 per cent increase over the 6.98 million recorded in the same month in April 2016.

A statement from Dubai Airports on Monday said passenger traffic in the first four months reached 30.1 million — up 7.8 per cent year-on-year compared to the 27.9 million passengers in the same period last year.

In terms of percentage growth, South America topped the list in April, with traffic on routes to the continent growing 38.9 per cent. It was followed by Eastern Europe (up 33.9 per cent), and Asia (up 18.9 per cent).

The Indian subcontinent outperformed all regions in terms of volume, with more than 1.69 million passengers. It was followed by Western Europe (1.68 million passengers), and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (1.3 million passengers).

Meanwhile, London was the top city destination from Dubai International, followed by Doha, Jeddah, Bangkok and Mumbai.

Paul Griffiths, chief executive officer Dubai Airports, said in a statement he was confident the numbers for the next few months will boost performance in the first half of the year, especially as Eid Al Fitr holiday coincides with summer holidays.

Dubai International in April handled 217,881 tonnes of freight, up 1.9 per cent, bringing cargo handled in the first four months of 2017 to 854,359 tonnes.

Dubai Airports had earlier said it expects to welcome a total of 90 million passengers by the end of 2017 across its two airports (Dubai International and Al Maktoum International Airport).
