Muscat: Several pieces of electronic devices, some of them designed for intelligence information gathering, were seized from a passenger arriving from an undisclosed overseas destination on Thursday.
According to a statement from the Royal Oman Police, the contraband was found in the luggage of the passenger as it was being routinely screened at the arrival section of Muscat International Airport.
Among those confiscated were sophisticated radar-detection gadgets, speed monitoring systems, and devices for eavesdropping on mobile phone conversations.
The items were confiscated by Customs authorities after the passenger failed to present an import permit. The passenger, whose nationality was not disclosed, was also detained for questioning.
High-speed chase
Meanwhile, the Royal Oman Police netted two suspected burglars after a high-speed chase through an industrial suburb of the capital city on Wednesday night.
According to the police, an anti-crime squad from Muscat’s Azaiba Police Station came upon the suspects at the Ghala Industrial Area who were on board a dilapidated commercial vehicle.
When ordered to stop, the suspects took off, prompting the police to give chase.
The fugitives eventually surrendered when additional mobile teams were deployed to the area.
In the vehicle, which was found to have been stolen, police found a stash of pry bars, lock picks and other theft tools. Some of the tools were also designed to break open safes.
During investigations that followed, authorities discovered that the pair was wanted by four different polices stations in the Muscat Command area in connection with a number of thefts and burglaries. They have been referred to the Public Prosecution for trial.
