Sharjah: Sharjah police have seized dozens of vehicles for flouting traffic rules in a campaign against reckless driving, Colonel Ahmad Bin Darwish, acting director of the Traffic and Patrol Department, said.

A total of 34 vehicles were confiscated during the campaign.

“They were organising illegal rallies and performing stunts on the roads and caused chaos and panic among other motorists,” Col. Bin Darwish said. The confiscated vehicles included cars with engines modified to make loud noises, he said.

“Such modifications cause a great disturbance to residents and also pose a safety hazard to motorists who drive recklessly and ultimately, put their own lives at risk,” he added.

He said the police had also received complaints from public about the teenagers annoying them by driving vehicles that make loud noises, disturbing residents’ sleep at night and endangering other road users.

“We have to take such strict measures against them to deter others from similar behaviour, added that the department is determined to end this phenomena to make the roads safe,” he added

He, however, said such unruly behaviour on the roads is not a characteristic of Emirati youth, but is limited to a few individuals who are ignorant of the traffic rules. He also urged the general public to report reckless drivers to police.

Sharjah Police would not tolerate road rage and harassment and would take strict measures against reckless drivers, he said.
