Sharjah Police say it’s part of drive to stem loitering in public places
Sharjah: More than 15,000 illegal residents were arrested in Sharjah during 2015 as part of a police campaign to stem loitering in public places, Sharjah Police said.
The 15,400 suspects were of various nationalities including men and women.
Lieutenant Colonel Saleem Hireimal, Head of violators Section at Sharjah Police, said those caught had entered the country illegally or absconded from their sponsors. They took part in activities to earn cash quickly, by either hawking, begging or gambling, police said.
Lt. Col. Hireimal said the campaign will continue according to a security plan set by Sharjah Police.
He said a large number of those arrested were found sheltering in abandoned buildings, building sites, workshops and empty labour accommodation. He said this campaign comes as part of a plan to curb the phenomenon of illegal residents. He stressed inspections would continue to combat any illegal practices.
Lt.Col Hireimal urged all community members to cooperate with the security agencies and report violators, beggars and vendors on 901 or the toll-free number Najeed 800 151 or via SMS on 7999 or www.shjpolice.gov.ae/najeed.
