Sudden swerving major cause with 461 accidents, closely followed by tailgating, which cased 435 accidents in Dubai
Dubai: Sudden Swerving and tailgating remain the top two causes of serious accidents in Dubai, with 461 and 435 accidents in the first nine months of this year respectively.
Driving under the influence of alcohol came in third, with 430 accidents, causing seven deaths, and 106 injuries, of which 10 were severe, 22 moderate and 74 minor. The accidents involved 796 vehicles.
Between January and the end of September Dubai roads saw 2,258 serious accidents, which caused 122 deaths, 141 severe injuries, 508 moderate injuries and 938 minor injuries, said Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Dubai Traffic Police.
He added that tailgating caused 25 fatalities, which is the highest among all causes of accidents, followed by sudden swerving with 24 deaths.
Fourth was being inconsiderate to other road users, which caused 217 accidents, 21 deaths, 29 serious injuries, 86 moderate and 95 minor. Of the casualties, five were drivers and 226 were pedestrians.
He said the fifth top cause of accidents was not abiding by lane discipline, with 147 accidents involving 288 vehicles, and causing three deaths, eight severe injuries, 31 moderate and 65 minor.
Hitting another vehicle came in first in the type of accidents, with 1,506 accidents involving 3,448 vehicles, causing 75 deaths, 77 severe injuries, 300 moderate and 669 minor.
Run-over accidents came in second with 246 incidents. There were 24 deaths, 35 severe injuries, 101 moderate and 108 minor. Four of the casualties were drivers and 274 were pedestrians.
Vehicles overturning caused 107 accidents involving 113 vehicles. There were eight deaths, seven severe injuries, 49 moderate and 74 minor.
In 2014, Dubai Traffic Police recorded 2,588 serious traffic accidents and 159 traffic deaths.
In 2014, 2,495 people were injured in traffic accidents, of which 179 people were seriously injured, 678 moderately injured and 116 sustained minor injuries.
There were 520 accidents caused by sudden swerving that killed 46 people in 2014.
