Abu Dhabi: As many as 18,640 vehicles were impounded in the past two weeks through Abu Dhabi Police’s newly-installed smart automatic road traffic violation detection system, the police said on Monday.

The new system automatically detected vehicles whose registrations are expired. Abu Dhabi Police activated the new smart automatic road traffic violation detection system on April 15.

The new system detects vehicles with expired registration and issues fines to the owners. The violators are fined Dh500 and four black points recorded against them. Their vehicles are also impounded for seven days, police said.

Rules

As per Article 25B of Road Traffic Law (driving a vehicle with expired licence), a Dh500 fine with four black traffic points will be imposed on the motorist and the vehicle will be confiscated for seven days.

The police said it doesn’t feel happy issuing fines at all but it urged motorists to follow traffic rules for the safety of all road users.

The police asked vehicle owners to renew their vehicles’ registrations on time before its expiry.

e-licensing services

It also urged them to take advantage of e-licensing services through its website, smart applications and self-service kiosks.

The smart system issued fines to vehicles — whose registrations were expired — after the expiry of vehicle’s insurances.

The system is activated on the internal and external roads of the emirate. It is viewed to save time and help reduce human efforts in the traffic departments.

The new system aims to further strengthen road safety for motorists, the police said.
