Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police have activated a new National Early Warning System, which sends awareness e-messages to motorists urging caution ahead of inclement weather and road pile-ups.
The messages aim to alert drivers on highways and those living in nearby areas to be careful in case of fog, unstable weather and accidents that might cause traffic jams.
The message sent by the system to drivers yesterday, through smart towers, informed them about the likelihood of intense fog in Abu Dhabi Island and asked them to maintain a safe distance and reduce their speed.
The smart towers used by the system utilise the most advanced global technologies, including a street speed control panel, a surveillance camera, a closed-circuit TV memory monitor and an automatic camera for vehicles equipped with radar panels.
The smart towers, which use sensors to monitor fog before sending instant signals to the control centre, aim to identify areas affected by weather fluctuations through traffic patrols, as well as the wider geographical area affected, including nearby regions, and establish and activate partnerships with the General Command of the Abu Dhabi Police to send alert messages to mobile phones.
The Abu Dhabi Police organised a workshop, in co-operation with the National Emergency and Crisis and Disasters Management Authority, to teach users on how to benefit from the system.
