Abu Dhabi: A total of 1,840 drivers were caught speeding dangerously at over 200km per hour in the capital during the first four months of this year, officials said on Wednesday.
The vehicles involved were confiscated and offenders referred to the Public Prosecution to face legal action, the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police said.
As part of a campaign to enhance road safety, the Abu Dhabi Police is utilising a number of methods including setting up mobile radars (snipers) and aerial surveillance on the capital’s roads.
Brigadier Khamis Ishaq Mohammad, Director of the directorate, said they will continue to review their field efforts to ensure that the capital meets its targets on limiting speed irregularities.
Speeding is one of the main reasons for accidents and road deaths, police said.
Aerial surveillance also helps identify locations of frequent congestion which helps direct patrols to these areas to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
The Abu Dhabi Police also aim to spread awareness about the dangers of speeding and racing on the road through organising lectures in universities and schools in addition to disseminating messages on social media.
Around 100,000 serious traffic violations were recorded during the first quarter. Speeding was the most dangerous of traffic offences, noted in 14 per cent of violations, with many drivers travelling faster than 60km/h on residential streets. Another 10 per cent of violators were found using a devices which are not hands-free while driving, 18 per cent were driving without fastening seat belts and eight per cent had worn out, unsafe tyres, Gulf News previously reported.
