Oprah Winfrey made headlines this week when she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes, but it was her 10 minute speech that triggered a surge of emotions in people all over the world.
At the end of her moving monologue, everyone gave her a standing ovation, with one though in mind: Oprah for President. It didn’t take long for Twitter to light up with the hashtag #Oprah2020, as stated in the Gulf News report, “Oprah for President? Twitter fans think so”, published January 9.
In her speech, the celebrity philanthropist touched upon her humble background, sexual assault, black lives and the infamous #MeToo movement, which exposed the sexual assault taking place in Hollywood for years.
While she was inspiring in her speech, and has been all her life, should Winfrey seriously run for President? We asked our readers and 51 per cent of people said no, while 49 said yes. Politics is a serious profession but the post is taken lightly as everyone aspiring to hold titles has no experience in the office.
Oprah is not the only celebrity who is considering running for elections. According to another Gulf News report published May 2017, actor Dwayne Johnson “The Rock” has also expressed a desire to run for office.
