Do not generalise

Disgusting headline (“These are the 5 I’s that dog Filipino expats in the UAE”, Gulf News, July 17). Do not generalise Filipino expatriates. There are many professional Filipinos working here. Just rude and insensitive.

Replace word

Gulf News, I am also bothered with the headline. I don’t see any relation between the word ‘dog’ and the content of the article? I have high respect for the newspaper and read articles frequently. I think this one is inappropriate. Please clarify or use a different word because it doesn’t sound right.

Missed the point

We know that dog is a verb too, but there is an appropriate way to use the word ‘dog’. Gulf News used it, followed by the word ‘Filipinos’. Not all readers will understand this.

Inappropriate

The newspaper has used inappropriate words in this article’s headline. Can its editors review twice or three times to be consistent, and to be fair towards Filipino readers? Please be wise enough to use better vocabulary so that no one will be offended by Gulf News articles.

On July 7, Gulf News posted an article with the digital headline “These are the 5 I’s that dog Filipino expats in the UAE, according to a legal expert”. We accept and take onboard the feedback from our readers.

However, to clarify. the word ‘dog’, when used as a verb as it was here, means “cause continual trouble for” (as per the Oxford English Dictionary). We were looking at issues that continually trouble Filipino expats in the UAE.

There was no intent of malice. But, we will be more careful in the future.

As a matter of record, the Web Editor who wrote the headline is a Filipino journalist himself, who loves his country and its people.
