Cairo: An Egyptian man Wednesday went on a shooting spree in a village north of Cairo, killing at least 17 people before being killed by police, security sources. An ex-convict, identified as Omar Abdul Razeq, shot randomly at residents in his village Meet Al Attar in the province of Qaliubia because they failed to support his family in a vendetta, added the sources. The shooter was found guilty of involvement in a local vendetta in which 23 people were killed five years ago. He was recently released from prison after serving his term. Large numbers of riot police were Wednesday deployed across the village for fear of retaliatory acts, added the sources. Egypt has been hit by a security breakdown since a popular uprising ousted long-standing president Hosni Mubarak in early 2011.
