London: A girl aged two was found stabbed to death in a London flat on Monday. Her mother was taken to hospital suffering from knife wounds.

Paramedics were called to their home in Barking just after midnight and immediately contacted police.

The girl was pronounced dead at the flat in Law House, Maybury Road. The condition of the mother, believed to be in her twenties, was described as serious.

Detectives are waiting at the hospital to question her as soon as she is fit to be interviewed.

They are also investigating the domestic background of the family and the possibility that an intruder was responsible.

Door-to-door inquiries

The scene was cordoned off today and detectives were making door to door inquiries in the area.

A police spokesman said: "A post mortem into the death is yet to be arranged but we believe we know the identity of the child. We are awaiting formal identification.

"Officers from the Metropolitan police's Child Abuse Investigation Command are conducting inquiries. No arrests have been made yet."

Meanwhile, police revealed on Monday that a man was stabbed to death on his doorstep while celebrating his birthday.

Mohammad Dilwer Miah, 28, died of a single knife wound to the chest at his home just after midnight on Friday in Hadleigh Close, Tower Hamlets.
