Pakistan has sentenced alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav to death, who confessed to spying for Indian intelligence. Jadhav was arrested in Balochistan on the charges of spying on March 24, 2016. It was reported that the retired Indian navy officer was “a serving officer in the Indian Navy and deputed to Research and Analysis Wing (RAW)”.

Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced to death 16 years ago on espionage charges, dies after a group of Pakistani prisoners attacked him in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. He was arrested in August 1990, on charges of carrying out four bombings in Faisalabad, Multan and Lahore which killed 14 Pakistani citizens.

After more than 30 years of incarceration in Pakistan, Surjeet Singh returns home and admits that he had been sent to spy for India. He had earlier denied the same when Pakistan arrested him on spying charges in the early 1980s. President Ghulam Ishaq Khan accepted his mercy plea and commuted his sentence into life in jail. Surjeet was released from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail.

Gopal Dass, arrested in Pakistan 27 years ago after being dubbed an Indian spy, returns home. Dass, 50, appeared to be in good health as he waved to his family after crossing into Indian Punjab at this border check post, about 30km from Amritsar.

April 27, 2010

An Indian diplomat Madhuri Gupta is arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence in a security breach. Gupta was sent to 14 days judicial custody by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja.

June 30, 2008

Ram Prakash, who was held in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail on spying charges is finally released after 10 years of imprisonment. He was arrested from Sialkot in 1998.

March 10, 2008

India returns the body of an alleged Pakistani spy who died in prison, less than a week after Pakistan freed an Indian held for 35 years on the same charge. Indian officials handed over the body of Khalid Mahmoud to Pakistani authorities at the main border crossing at Wagah.

An Indian who insisted he was not a spy during more than three decades on Pakistan’s death row admits he was a secret agent after his return home. Kashmir Singh, 61, is freed by Pakistan after 35 years at the urging of its human rights minister and crossed the border to India.

2004 Ramraj, known to work for Indian intelligence agency for 18 years, was sent to Pakistan in 2004, but was caught soon after. He was sentenced to jail for six years and later returned to India.

2001

An Indian spy Ravindra Kaushik dies while imprisoned in Multan Jail after contracting pulmonary tuberculosis. He was sent to Pakistan in 1975, where he enrolled in Karachi University under the alias of Nabi Ahmad Shakir. After graduation, Kaushik joined the Pakistan Army as a commissioned officer and got promoted to the rank of Major. During 1979-83, he passed on sensitive information to RAW. His run as a spy ended when another Indian spy was caught by Pakistani forces. The arrested spy blew Kaushik’s cover.

1999

Shaikh Shamim was arrested by Pakistani authorities in 1989 and was charged with spying for RAW. He was caught “red-handed” near the Pak-India border for spying. He was hanged by the Pakistan authorities in 1999.

1999 — Satpal — Satpal was sent to Pakistan as a spy during the 1999 Kargil War. He died in a Pakistan jail in March 2000. His body was sent to India the same year.

1996

Mehboob Elahi, has served two decades in several Pakistani prisons from 1977-1996 charged with spying for India. He was charged for crossing over to Pakistan — once via East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and once via the western border. He spent nearly 10 years in Pakistan from 1968 to 1977 after spying in various government organisations, including the Pakistani army and police.

1990 — Gurbaksh Ram — Ram was sent to Pakistan in 1998 to gather information about the weapons and ammunition used by the Pakistan Army. He was caught near the border in 1990 while returning India. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison and released in 2006.

1977 — Vinod Sawhney — Vinod was sent to Pakistan in 1977 and was arrested in the same year. After interrogation and trial, he was sentenced to jail for 11 years. He was sent back to India March 1988.

1974 — Balwir Singh — Balwir was sent to Pakistan in 1971 and was arrested in 1974. After completing his sentence of 12 years in prison, he was sent back to India in 1986.
