Ten billion trees in five years? Social media users say, “Yes!”

Twitter users in Pakistan seem to be up to the challenge after Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan announced his ‘Plant for Pakistan’ campaign a few days ago with the aim of planting 10 billion trees in the country.

Using #Plant4Pakistan and #GreenPakistan, tweeps posted images of them planting trees as part of the ‘10 billion tree tsunami’ and talking about the need to reconnect people with Nature.

Tweep @MuhammadLila wrote: “In Pakistan, something extraordinary is happening. People are planting trees. Kids, seniors, you name it. In just one day, they’ll have planted 1.5 MILLION saplings - part of a campaign to fight climate change. Goodness can be anywhere. #Plant4Pakistan”

Other Twitter users highlighted how trees are necessary to ensure a healthy life.

@asmashirazi wrote: “What a great move and campaign by the #PM @ImranKhanPTI ... we need oxygen, we need water and we need blue skies. Let each one of us #Plant4Pakistan.”

Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra, a politician, posted a decades-old picture of when Imran Khan had started a planting drive as a cricketer. He added: “A blast from the past. I think this was in 1989 when @ImranKhanPTI was advocating planting trees in Pakistan. I remember seeing these in the Herald Magazine. Make sure that today, you #Plant4Pakistan.”

Another tweep spoke about the diversity of plants being used in the drive.

@amarguriro: “First time ever, date palm plantation drive initiated in #Thar #desert #Sindh

#Plant4Pakistan #GreenPakistan”

Posting a picture of young boys enjoying their participation in the campaign, tweep @AmirMateen2 wrote: “This should be the poster picture for ‘Green Pakistan’. What a snap. It’s not just about growing trees but also nurturing love for nature among kids. #GreenPakistan @aminattock”

Another part of the drive is the distribution of pencils with seeds to schoolchildren, to encourage them to be a part of the campaign.

Tweep @awais5689: “Imran Khan to launch pencils with seeds (“Beej waali pencil”) as part of the ⁦#GreenPakistan and #Plant4Pakistan campaign in Karachi. A very innovative concept to encourage children to plant. The rubber part of pencil has a degradable capsule that contains seeds ...”

Others felt the campaign would help change Pakistan in the long run.

@rahimyusufzai1 tweeted: “Inspiring stories from Kamalia, Changa Manga as Pakistanis in large numbers take part in Plant4Pakistan 10 Billion Tree plantation drive and set up records. PM Imran Khan’s campaign is biggest ever in Pakistan’s history. Let’s join it to protect our environment, make Pakistan green.”
