Patna: A man in Bihar was beaten with shoes on the order of a village court after he fell in love with a local girl. The police have arrested two persons in connection with the incident.

As per the report, Brajesh Kumar, a resident of Bantara village in southern Bihar’s Aurangabad district had fallen in love with a local girl from other caste whose wedding had been fixed with another youth. When the girl’s would-be in-laws came to know of their love affairs, her marriage was cancelled.

The girl’s parents later brought the matter to the notice of the local village council chief Akhtiyar Khan who held a village court over the issue. The court after hearing the matter ordered for beating the youth with shoes for 50 times and also ordered his family to pay a fine of Rs100,000 (Dh5,319) to the girl’s family, reports.

Witnesses said the youth was subsequently beaten with shoes but someone in the crowd made a video of the incident which soon went viral. It was then that the police came to know of the incident which took place in the weekend.

Acting on the video footage, the police have arrested two persons, including the village council chief, in this connection. “We have taken the matter very seriously and severe action will be taken against the accused persons,” local district superintendent of police Deepak Barnwal told the media on Friday.

Love remains a “taboo” in Bihar. In February this year, a low caste boy was killed and his private parts chopped for falling in love with a girl from upper caste. The incident had taken place in Patna district though the victim hailed from the Aurangabad district.

Another such horrible incident had taken place in Bhagalpur district where a youth was shot dead on the directive of the village court for falling in love with a girl and then eloping with her. The incident took place in June 2017.
