Eminent writer Mahasweta Devi dies

The social critic had been undergoing medical treatment for the past two months

Kolkata: Eminent writer and social activist Mahasweta Devi passed away at a Kolkata nursing home on Thursday following prolonged illness.

She was 90.

“She passed away at 3.16pm following cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure,” a doctor said.

Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1926, Devi’s writing depicted the suffering of tribals and dalits.

She also taught at Bijoygarth College and worked as a journalist.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award winner is survived by her daughter-in-law and grandchild. Her son died two years ago.
