A shocking video of mob violence has gone viral in India, today. The Twitter clip shows a man being beaten with rods and a large hammer, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Many shared the “disturbing” video, asking whether, even a COVID-19 lockdown was not enough to stop such violent behaviour in India, these days.

Sharing the video on May 10, tweep @iamdevv23 posted in Hindi: “A shocking video from Barsana in Mathura. These mobsters have graduated from attacking with sticks, directly to attacking with a hammer. It is shocking how the bullies have injured the victim, he is in the hospital. People are now promoting violent mob justice. This is painful!”

While details of the attackers and the victim are yet to emerge, tweeps shared the video tagging the state and district police departments, urging immediate action.

Highlighting the complete lack of law and order in the state, @iShantanuSingh retweeted the video and posted: “This is status of law and order in UP's Mathura District. Zero fear, of law and order, and of @Uppolice during Lockdown…”

After the video went viral and sparked outrage, Mathura police took action based on the complaints. In a tweet response, they confirmed that four people had been arrested in connection with the case after the video came to their notice. A First Information Report (FIR) has been file and police are further probing the issue.

Tweeps have requested authorities to ensure that suitable punishment is meted out to the attackers.

Twitter user @shahrukhdiwani1 posted: “I could not watch this video, how can people be so barbaric and heartless. Hope the people who did this get the maximum punishment.”

Tweep @iSadiaSheikh added: “Omg this is unbearable even to watch. Humans have turned into ugly beasts. How is this even possible?”

Many tweeps reacted saying how, incidents of mob violence seem to have increased in India, in recent years.

Tweep @RaeezMohammedM1 said it was the current Indian government that seems to be allowing such criminals to enjoy impunity without being questioned. He posted: “I can’t imagine how after this government came into power, law has reached in hands of [such] people, now they are entitled to do whatever they want. ….Disheartens others who are innocent.”

@Unknownboyme: “You have to have a hateful upbringing and background to even think of doing this... These are not humans they are coward insects. They have no values no shame no respect for any living being. And the hateful media only brought out their true colours. #ModiGovtFailsIndia”

Tweep @ajalindian called it a complete collapse of law and order in the country.
