China foils two 'terror attacks'

Beijing: China said on Sunday it had averted two "terror attacks," one of them targeting the upcoming Olympic games, according to state-run media.

The attacks were blamed on separatists from the country's far western region of Xinjiang.

According to officials, separatists killed earlier this year in a raid were plotting a terror attack on the Olympic games, which are due to start in early August.

Meanwhile, another official said Sunday they had foiled a terror attack aboard a Chinese jetliner bound for Beijing last week.

Crew members of the China Southern flight discovered and foiled an attempt to “cause an air disaster'' last Friday.
Officials said the incident is currently under investigation.

The autonomous region in Xinjiang is home to about 19 million people, most of whom are Muslims who oppose Beijing's rule.
