Dhaka: Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation into a scandal at the country's main Hazrat Shahjalal Airport  where a huge display screen aired a pornographic movie for five minutes, officials said on Sunday.

"An investigation is underway while the people responsible for the scandal  were already taken to task," a Civil Aviation Authority spokesman told Gulf News without elaborating.

But another official said the operator was sentenced to two months in jail after a summary trial by a magistrate in the airport. An official investigation was ordered to find out if any criminal intent was involved.

His comments came after newspapers carried a report saying that the big screen at the main passenger lounge on Friday suddenly started airing a pornographic film, exposing several hundred passengers and visitors to massive shock or embarrassment.

Civil aviation officials said the display screen was supposed to show  recorded documentaries about the culture and geography of Bangladesh, a  predominantly Muslim nation where public discussions of sex remains nearly a taboo.
